‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme
21-10-18
It does not usually happen that there are two successive ‘special’ days at Parivartan. Apparently, this October is an exception. After celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child last week, it was time again to commemorate the just concluded Dussehra on the 19th of this month. And Parivartan was going to do it in style – through games with coveted prizes for the children.
The volunteers for the day were Ankit Pal, Shaswat Sinha, Priyanshi Gupta, Anchal Omar, Nagesh Tiwari, Rahul Gupta, Shreya Acharya, Disha Saraswat, and Chhavi Chaudhary.
Dr. Indraneel Mandal began by explaining to the students the symbolic importance of Dusshera, which celebrates the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the King of Lanka. When prodded by Dr Mandal, the children spoke of how it symbolized the ultimate victory of Good over Evil. Dr. Mandal referred to events in Lord Rama’s life to explain why it was important to be good, even though it is not always the easier option. The volunteers, led by Ankit, Shaswat, and Priyanshi conducted two games – Passing The Parcel and Musical Chairs. Three winners each were identified in both the games, with one group receiving a bat-ball set each as a prize, while each of the other group was presented with a toy pistol set.
Later Anchal held an impromptu quiz to test the knowledge of the children, both regarding the Ramayana and the previous day’s class. Those who answered correctly received a toffee.
The day ended with the distribution of Good Day Biscuits and Mango Bite Toffees among the children. Dr Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti planned the activity and guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme
14-10-18
There are important days on the Parivartan calendar. And then there is a day like the International Day for the Girl Child.
The most important presence in the day’s programme was our Director Management Prof (Dr) Ajay Kumar, who graced the occasion considering its significance.
The day’s programme started with Prof. Lokesh Upreti highlighting the importance of observing 11th of October as the International Day for the Girl Child. He stressed on why gender equality was necessary for a truly modern 21st century.
An interesting aspect of the day’s celebrations was that the children created their own slogans in support of the girl child. Speaking of slogans, Beti Bachao Beti Padao was again under the microscope – while importance of the second part was not lost on the children, they were not so sure about the first part viz., Beti Bachao. Most could figure out what the girl child had to be protected from. Some thought they needed protection from the boys; others were aware of the dangers to which girls were exposed. One enterprising child, however, managed to hit the hammer on the nail – the occurrence of female foeticide.
In the next part of the programme, Jhalak, Samina, Anu, Radhika and Anchal each spoke about female icons and achievers from our nation – Indira Gandhi, P.T. Usha, Kalpana Chawla, Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, and others. A quiz was held at the end to evaluate the children’s understanding.
The occasion was graced by two special invitees – Ms. Babita Papnai and Ms. Karuna Rawat – primary school teachers from nearby areas. They enlightened the children through a session on ‘Good Touch and Bad Touch’. It was a very interesting interaction that turned out to be an eye opener for the children.
In the final session of the day children were randomly selected to come forward and give extempore speeches on the topic ‘My Mother’. The session was judged by Director Sir and the top three speakers were selected by him. Together with the three winners from the earlier quiz session, they received Cadbury’s Celebration Packs as prizes.
At last the day came to an end with the distribution of Britannia Butter bite Biscuits and Mango Bite Toffees among the children. There was a photo session with the Director Management sir of the prize winners and the volunteers. The student members were understandably very motivated with the presence of Director Management Sir.
Prof. Lokesh Upreti accompanied and motivated the student volunteers, and guided them in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan

‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme
07-10-18
The afternoon of 7th October, 2018 started for the children at Parivartan with a somewhat unusual question – who amongst them was the most qualified to be a good leader? That set the tone for the rest of the day – an impromptu session on leadership, followed by a discussion on air and water.
The day started with an argument among some of the boys in the learners’ group: Sabse bada leader kaun? As if on cue, Aprajita, Samina and Abhishek jumped into the interaction to ask the children what should be the qualities of a good leader. Up went the hands, as the kids put forward their ideas. These were clarified by the student members of Parivartan.
Prof. Lokesh Upreti joined in to demonstrate the importance of democracy and how the rulers are chosen within such a system by conducting a small role play activity.
The next part of the programme was more prosaic: the air and water around us. Abhishek discussed with the children about the air and its components. Similarly there was an interaction on the water cycle and the different forms of water.
Prof. Upreti referred to the need for rain water harvesting. Amazingly some of the children were aware of this. The day ended with the distribution of "Krack-jack Biscuits" and "eclairs Toffees" among the children. Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
