Following the registration of the assembled delegates, the session began with the Welcome remarks by Mr. Rajeev Talwar, President, PHDCCI. Mr. Talwar spoke glowingly of the progress made by the Indian economy where a significant proportion of the population living below the poverty line now enjoy access to basic services. He referred to positive signs for the economy such as fast growth, rising IIP, inflation being under control and stability in the trade deficit. He also referred to the positive steps taken by government and how they were helping the country.

Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal, Vice President, PHDCCI, provided a brief introduction to Dr. Ajay Chhibber, who has worked as an economist with theWorld Bank, and authored several books on economics. In fact, Dr.Chhibber had brought along with him a book that he had authored for FICCI on the road ahead for the Indian economy in the next thirty years. The topic of the day, of course, would be The Economic Agenda for the Next Five Years.

Finally Dr.Chhibber came to the podium for the much awaited talk. He started by mentioning how India as a country was at major crossroads economically, politically and socially. He cautioned that while India is undoubtedly moving ahead, the rest of the world is not standing still. Global forces have become more challenging in the past twenty five years.

Considering India’s meteoric rise, he spoke of howback in first half of the 20th Century, India had a so called Hindu rate of growth at 3 to 4%, and how that very rate could rise to 25 to 30% by 2030. He referred to why India needed to find 6 to 6.5 million jobs per day for a burgeoning young population, and how labour force participation has to grow for women.

During the rest of the discourse Dr.Chhibber touched on a variety of topics like the need for better healthcare spending; the importation of sanitation; the trade wars between China and the United States, and how that opens up opportunities for India; the positive impact of a revolutionary step like the introduction of GST; environmental issues like air and water quality; and the issue of financial inclusion, including steps needed for better coverage of the same.

The lecture was followed by an interesting Q&A session where different sections of the audience had some very thought provoking questions for the dignitaries on the stage, leading to a more wholesome discussion of the topics on hand.

Finally the session drew to a close with the concluding remarks and vote of thanks by Dr.D.K.Aggarwal, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI.

‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme

16-12-18

At 'Parivartan' - The Slum Education Programme at Department of Management, I.T.S Ghaziabad, we had previously a neat system in place - there are days when we have ‘serious’ classes based on traditional learning; and then there are others where we have tried to introduce a ‘fun’ element through games that offer prizes. Well, now we decided to punch the two aspects together and voila! The ‘thinking’ games were born

The volunteers for the day were Hitesh Sharma, Shiksha Rawat, Yogesh Bisht, Shubham Kalla, Shubham Mishra, Ashish Agarwal, Bhavendra Singh, Anjali Kumari, Megha Nigam and Rahul Raj.

The first game dealt with the 29 states of India and their chief attractions. One by one, Hitesh and Shiksha asked the children about each state (Shiksha had already put the list on the board). The kids were able to correctly answer the most obvious ones, while there was predictably some difficulty with the less common ones.

The second part was more interesting in the sense that possibly for the first time, some riddles (paheli would be a more suitable word, considering that they were in Hindi) were put to the children. The riddles had been collected by the volunteers, and Prof. Lokesh Upreti was the one asking them. Amidst a lot of enthusiasm, the children tried to guess the answers. The four winners from the 2 activities, were given a "Luxor Sketch Pen Kit" each as prizes.

For a long time, Dr Rajeev Johari, faculty member at I.T.S, had expressed an interest in being involved with Parivartan. That day finally came today as Dr. Johari and his daughter arrived to distribute Hindi storybooks among the children. In order to impart a sense of seriousness, it had been decided that those students who attended classes regularly and were active during the sessions would be given the storybooks.

As the longish day drew to a close, ‘Bikano Peanuts’ and ‘Parle Orange Bite’ toffees were distributed among the children. Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.

09-12-18

‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme of I.T.S Ghaziabad organized activity on 9th December, 2018. Winter has well and truly arrived. The mellow rays of the sun, the subdued surroundings and the healthful nutriments – all are conducive to some serious study work. And that is just what we had in mind at Parivartan this Sunday.

The first session related to the need for the conservation of energy. First time Parivartan volunteer Upasana had rightly chosen this to raise the awareness of the children on a burning issue. In a way it was a continuation of the lesson on energy sources dealt with a fortnight ago. Upasana explained to the kids how energy sources can be classified according to whether it is renewable or non-renewable. She stressed on the need for switching to the former, pointing out why the traditional sources are not going to last forever, apart from their tendency to add to existing pollution levels.

Abhishek took the center stage in the second session. He had selected the rather unique topic of the leading forts in India. History captivates us and forts were an important element of the defenses organised by the rulers or yore. Abhishek spoke about six well known forts – the Golden Fort at Jaisalmer, the Amber Fort, the Red Fort, the Mehrangarh Fort, the Purana Quila at Delhi and the Agra Fort. He mentioned details like the year of construction and the monarch under whom the fort was made, making sure that the children were noting and remembering the details.

‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme

02-12-18

Sometimes, even while keeping to the no frills class form, there comes a topic that offers something entirely new to the children. This time it was the Seven Wonders of the World – a truly inspired choice from the volunteers!
The volunteers for the day were Shiksha Rawat, Sonia Dhawan, Nagesh Tiwari, Sachin Kesarwani, Ayush Goyal, Abhishek Kumar Gupta,  Sreyashi Biswas and Surbhi Gupta.

Shiksha began the proceedings by introducing the learners to the Seven Wonders of the World – the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, the one and only Taj Mahal, the statue of Christ the Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Colosseum at Rome and Chichen Itza in Mexico. She explained the rich history behind each of these marvels of creation. For a change, the children were hearing about things and places that they had almost no idea about; but as usual, there was no dearth of enthusiasm and curiosity.

This in itself was almost enough for an entire day’s session. Towards the end, Sonia chipped in with a talk about the newly unveiled Statue of Unity in Gujarat. This provided an opportunity to throw some light on the inspiring life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. As if that was not enough, Sachin decided to close the day with a touch of maths, as he and Sonia took a quick revision of the kids’ knowledge of multiplication.

One of the great things about Parivartan and its classes is that, diverse people stop by and take an interest in the classes for the children from an underprivileged background. Today it was the turn of senior Police Officer Mr. Lokendra Singh. He spoke of his desire to help. He got some snacks for the children. Then he held an impromptu quiz on topics of general awareness, gifting the snacks to those who answered correctly. He also used the opportunity to motivate the children on how to lead a good and healthy life.

At last things came to a close with the distribution of "Butter Bite" biscuits and ‘Mango Bite’ toffees. Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
