‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme

16-12-18

At 'Parivartan' - The Slum Education Programme at Department of Management, I.T.S Ghaziabad, we had previously a neat system in place - there are days when we have ‘serious’ classes based on traditional learning; and then there are others where we have tried to introduce a ‘fun’ element through games that offer prizes. Well, now we decided to punch the two aspects together and voila! The ‘thinking’ games were born

The volunteers for the day were Hitesh Sharma, Shiksha Rawat, Yogesh Bisht, Shubham Kalla, Shubham Mishra, Ashish Agarwal, Bhavendra Singh, Anjali Kumari, Megha Nigam and Rahul Raj.

The first game dealt with the 29 states of India and their chief attractions. One by one, Hitesh and Shiksha asked the children about each state (Shiksha had already put the list on the board). The kids were able to correctly answer the most obvious ones, while there was predictably some difficulty with the less common ones.

The second part was more interesting in the sense that possibly for the first time, some riddles (paheli would be a more suitable word, considering that they were in Hindi) were put to the children. The riddles had been collected by the volunteers, and Prof. Lokesh Upreti was the one asking them. Amidst a lot of enthusiasm, the children tried to guess the answers. The four winners from the 2 activities, were given a "Luxor Sketch Pen Kit" each as prizes.

For a long time, Dr Rajeev Johari, faculty member at I.T.S, had expressed an interest in being involved with Parivartan. That day finally came today as Dr. Johari and his daughter arrived to distribute Hindi storybooks among the children. In order to impart a sense of seriousness, it had been decided that those students who attended classes regularly and were active during the sessions would be given the storybooks.

As the longish day drew to a close, ‘Bikano Peanuts’ and ‘Parle Orange Bite’ toffees were distributed among the children. Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
