I.T.S, Mohan Nagar, Ghaziabad conducted ‘Parivartan’ – The Slum Education Programme on the 1st of April, 2024. With summer well and truly on, it was time to get ahead with Parivartan amidst the rising temperatures.
The volunteers for the day were Aakash, Priyanka, Vikrant, Akshay, Ashutosh, Nitika, Taniya, Chandan, Roshan and Shivansh.
As Ambedkar Jayanti is not far away, the lessons began with Priyanka and Ashutosh describing the life of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. They spoke about the prejudices that the great man faced right from his childhood. His education abroad and significant achievements were also highlighted. At the end of the session the knowledge of the kids was tested with questions.
Vikrant then explained the concept of sustainable development to the children. With climate change becoming a real issue and the environment becoming an important consideration, this was very relevant. Aakash and Akshay then talked about precautions for the incoming summer season. With forecasts warning about an impending heat wave, the need for staying hydrated at all times is paramount.
There were two learning games for the day. First the children participated in a friendly Word Fight, in which every completed word had to be followed by another word beginning with the last letter of the previous one. The other game was focused on the impending Mothers’ Day, as the tiny tots were asked to prepare greeting cards expressing their love and gratitude for their mothers. The best efforts in both rounds received prizes in the form of study aids, caps and an umbrella.
Finally refreshments were distributed in the form of Haldiram Takatak Chatpata Masala, Parle Mango Bite toffees, and Frooti before the learners proceeded home. Dr Indraneel Mandal planned the activities with the volunteers and motivated them on site in the execution of the various tasks.
