As is the norm, the proceedings opened with an explanation about why Diwali is observed every year. Debutante volunteers Ravika and Anamika made an impressive start as they went about discussing how the occasion is supposed to mark Lord Ram’s victory over the rakshasha king Ravan, symbolising the triumph of Good over Evil. Different facets of the protagonists’ lives were also highlighted during the course of the class. The volunteers also used the session to make the children aware about why they need to be more responsible while burning crackers during the festival, and how such crackers are ultimately harmful for the environment.

The remaining course of the session was dedicated to a revision of concepts learnt during the day. The questions centred on the mythological aspects, as well as more realistic isues like safety and protecting the environment. Those who answered correctly were rewarded with pack of Frooti each. As always the day’s activities ended with the distribution of laddoos, ‘Britannia Good Day’ biscuits and ‘Parle Melody’ toffees. Ever so often passing folk get inspired by our activities and donate foodstuff for giving out to the kids.

Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti planned and guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
