On 9th of September, 2018 the activity of ‘Parivartan’- the Slum Education Programme, a CSR initiative of I.T.S, Ghaziabad, celebrated the International Literacy Day. The literacy mission is obviously the main driving force behind an activity like Parivartan. We intended to use the day to highlight the importance of literacy in a country like India by distributing a notebook and a pen to every participant to inculcate the feeling of basic education in each one of them.

In the first part of the day’s programme Prof. Lokesh Upreti explained the concept of literacy to the children, pointing out why it was important and necessary. He emphasized that without being educated, people could be easily duped as they would have no way of independently verifying the facts and information provided by others.

The second part of the plan for the day consisted of ‘Mera Parichay’ – a session to familiarise the children with how to write their names as well as those of their parents in Hindi and English. This turned out to be the most enthusiastic part for the little ones. Almost all of them came up to the two faculty members as well as the student volunteers to make sure that they were writing everything correctly.
In the concluding part, a quiz was held with a view to revise past learning. Prizes in the form of pencil boxes and purses donated by the I.T.S Parivar were handed out to those answered correctly. The excitement was palpable as the children were more than eager to win their chosen ‘gifts’!

The day ended with the distribution of Bikano Namkeen and Mango Bite Toffees among the children. Dr. Indraneel Mandal accompanied and motivated the student volunteers. Prof. Lokesh Upreti guided the volunteers in the conduct of the programme as the faculty coordinator of CSR Club - Parivartan.
